Folios: An Introduction

In a way, my folios were conceived in reaction to the problems encountered in making accordion books. Envisioning a book, I would construct a blank 24 page accordion by overlapping, folding, and pasting together sheets of handmade Nepal paper. As one might have predicted, after working on several of the plates, my style would change, or some other inexplicable force would push words and images in another — perhaps more interesting — direction than where I had begun. I would then abandon the entire project and begin again. Eventually, I reasoned that if I worked two adjoining plates as a folio, I could take advantage of surprises without having to abandon entire projects. An added advantage is that the plates may be displayed individually or joined temporally and shown as accordion books. My folios are in the Penn State and Utah State library special collections: Click Here
